End of Term Principal's Letter

19th December 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As we near the end of 2017, I wanted to take the opportunity to write to you to thank you for all the support that we have received during this term and to celebrate some of our successes.

There have been several notable achievements and events this term, including: the Rocky Monster Show; the CPR training before school with Mrs Baker; the Police-Youth Roundtable event; the German Market trips and the academy’s first Celebration Evening, to name just a few.  The Celebration Evening provided us with the opportunity to welcome back the year 11 of 2016-17 and to mark their success.  There is little doubt that the academy’s first ever results have brought great satisfaction to students, parents and staff.

As an academy, we are judged by the progress students make from their Key Stage 2 scores to their GCSE results in the best eight subjects taken.  Schools are then given a Progress 8 score and ranked against other schools nationally and locally.  Harris Academy Rainham has a progress 8 score of +0.53 which places us second in all the secondary schools in Havering.  This is a staggering improvement, placing us in the top 11% of schools nationally (366th out of 3466 secondary schools).  We are exceptionally proud of our students and their achievements.

We are constantly seeking ways to improve our school and we are very aware that communication can become a source of frustration to parents.  To this end, we appointed Achievement Leaders for each year group.  Achievement Leaders track the progress of students in each year group and intervene where they identify concerns.  They are also available for parents to contact if there are any concerns.  These staff are:

Year 7:     Ms A Forster

Year 8:     Mr K Kandasamy

Year 9:     Mr M Goodman

Year 10:   Mr N Goldsmith

Year 11:   Mr T Street / Mrs C Bannister

Any parental queries or concerns can be directed to either your child’s Learning Guide or to the specific member of staff above.  The Academy has traditionally posted all communication home to parents. However, this is something we intend to change from January due to the considerable financial cost incurred.  We have recently written to parents regarding the “My Child at School” (MCAS) online portal.  MCAS links directly to our Management Information System to provide you with real- time information about your child.   You can access your child’s timetable, classes, attendance records, positive behaviour points and all correspondence from the academy.  All letters will also be sent out on Facebook, Twitter, the school app and the website.

I take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support.  I hope you have a relaxing Christmas break and I look forward to welcoming all our students back in January.

Yours faithfully,

Mr G Stananought
