Careers Information and Advice for Students

The notion of a ‘job for life’ has disappeared nearly completely from the UK employment scene, with many people working in jobs that simply did not exist only 5-10 years ago. It is crucially important that students are helped to recognise the exciting new opportunities that are available to them whilst gaining the knowledge, skills and expertise that will enable them to be successful in whatever field they desire.

Careers Information, Advice and Guidance is an integral part of a students' wider education at our academy. Students receive the opportunity to develop their understanding of careers and future pathways through one-to-one meetings and small group work with a Careers Adviser appointed by the Harris Federation to work with students on career planning.

Many issues and challenges crop up for our young people when considering their next step. These include choosing qualifications, develolping personal qualities, looking at accessing university courses, apprenticeships or even self-employment. Often students are not sure what further learning they will need to be able to do a particular career. Many students are really unsure over what type of career would even suit them.

These, and many other issues, form the basis of our careers guidance at the academy.  As well as providing bespoke careers advice and guidance, our advisors also work with the academy to develop the careers education programme across all year groups.

Meetings with our advisors can be arranged through the academy reception or email Mr N Goldsmith n.goldsmith@harrisrainham.org.uk.

Student Progression

Our students progress into a range of options after Year 11 or Year 13, usually Sixth Form or college, university or apprenticeships. We support them with their decision-making and applications.

The academy recognises the importance of ‘employability learning’, and as part of this Year 10 and Year 12 students are supported to find work experience with local and city-based employers. This enables them to get a better understanding of professional work environments, make well-informed decisions and be more successful in their job and apprenticeship hunts.

Opportunities for access

A number of events integrated into the academy careers’ programme will offer providers an opportunity to come into academy to speak to pupils and/or their parents/carers:
