What will I study?
This is a practical and theory based course through which students will learn the principles of food preparation and nutrition.

- Where food comes from (provenance)
- Cooking and food preparation
- Knife skills
- Preparation of fruits and vegetables
- Tenderise and marinate
- Judge and manipulate sensory properties
- Test for readiness
- Using raising agents and making sauces
- Coagulation: setting using heat or gelation
- Using hob, grill and oven
- Making a dough, shaping and finishing
How will I be assessed?
Component 1 is the written examination (50%) based on the principles of food preparation and nutrition. Component 2 is the Non-Examination Assessment (NEAs) which is internally assessed and externally moderated. Assessment one is the food science investigation (15%) and assessment two the food preparation assessment (35%) a prepare, cook and present task with accompaniments to form part of a meal which must include supportive work.
Anything else I need to know
The course provides an ideal foundation for students wishing to study Food at AS and A2 level. It prepares students for degrees with a focus in food and nutrition science, food manufacturing, food biotechnology and sports science degrees. This GCSE also prepares student who are looking for apprenticeships in the food and catering industry and qualifies them for a range of catering courses due to its practical nature. Career opportunities include Dietician, Midwifery, General Practice Nurse, Nutritionist, Toxicologist, Research Scientist, Nutrition Therapist and Paediatrician. If creativity is your strength, your career path may include Food Journalism and Photography, Food demonstration, Retail Sales and Marketing or a rewarding career as a Food Product Developer. Other possibilities include Social work, Teaching or Environmental Health Officer. Additionally, food could be combined with science, media or psychology for some interesting career paths
