Heritage and Culture Week - Full Report
The first of our Heritage and Cultural Week took place earlier in February, with two more weeks already being planned. The purpose of the weeks is to celebrate the rich diversity of backgrounds and cultures of our staff and students, by exploring and experiencing different aspects of those cultures at first hand. Here's a taste of what happened.
During PHSE lessons students looked into 'Britishness' and took the national British test.
In Geography and History students learnt about the history of spices and where they originated from. In food lessons students cooked with spices and discussed its impact on flavour.
In Art and Design students had a professional Henna tattoo artist who demonstrated this ancient art and discussed its origin.
In English, students studied British identity through poems including The British by Benjamin Zephaniah.
During Music lessons students experienced from local musicians how to play the Indian Dhol.
And also West African drumming.
The Canteen served up food from around the world and this included Chinese New Year of the Pig celebrations. The Canteen also has over 47 flags to show the rich diversity of staff and student heritage at Harris Academy Rainham.
We're looking forward to the next Heritage and Culture Day already!
