National Youth Jazz Orchestra Inspires Students

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra Messengers came to our school recently to introduce our students to the world of jazz.

They performed six pieces from traditional jazz to compositions by two members of the orchestra itself. The band was made up of gigging musicians playing the trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass guitar, trombone and drums

The members of the band introduced our students to each instrument and talked about their roles within a jazz band. They used key language, like improvisation and composition, reinforcing musical terms that our students will learn throughout Key Stage 3.

Best of all, our students had the chance to be inspired by some of the best young musicians in the country, performing right here in our school hall.

What students said...

" I loved the drummer, he was really good."

"Amazing playing from the sax player... she was cool."

"It was really good learning about the different instruments.. I liked their demonstrations."

"They were all so talented..."

Thanks to Megan, Alex, Sharon, Bailey and Skye for their comments!

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYZO) is a charity whose mission is to promote jazz as an exciting, engaging and inspirational art form through world-class performances and education work.

Their Messengers sextet, which performed at our school, is designed to reflect the diversity of the NYJO family and engage children and young people in listening and learning jazz music through inspirational in-school concerts.
